The shamrock is a tiny plant that is recognized all over the world as a symbol for Ireland. Connected with Saint Patrick the leaves of the shamrock were used to explain the trinity of the Christian faith. St. Patrick is credited with the spread of Christianity across Ireland.

The shamrock is not the name of the plant itself. It refers to the leaves and short stem that appear above ground on the clover or trefoil plant. Botanically the shamrock refers to either the species tirfolium dubium (lesser clover) or trifolium repens (white clover). The actual plant that created the Shamrock craze has actually been a subject of debate in the botanical world as far back as the 16th century.

In early Irish literature the plant is referred to simply as clover. The term Shamrock is first seen in English literature in 1571 where it (mistakenly) said the plant was eaten by people of Ireland. The plant that was actually eaten was wood sorrell.

Up until the 19th century the shamrock was largely associated with Saint Patrick. It was only when republican military groups adopted it during the long struggle for independence that it became instantaneously synonymous with Ireland. The shamrock began to be seen on flags and uniforms. In 1801 the Act of Union brought Ireland under British rule and in the same way that the rose was England’s national symbol, the leek was Wales’ and the thistle was Scotland’s, the shamrock became Ireland’s default symbol.

Today the shamrock is synonymous with Ireland and carries a voice of celebration.
